Finding Old Statutory Codes

by Mary S. Searles on 2019-10-15T11:11:00-04:00 in Legal Research, Legislative Histories -- New Hampshire, Statutes -- New Hampshire | 0 Comments

The New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated (RSA), New Hampshire's statutory code, was created in 1955.  A statutory code contains general and permanent* laws organized by subject. Statutory codes make it easier to find the law on a particular topic.  Before 1955, there were several other versions of New Hampshire's statutory code. Several of these older codes have been digitized and are available online.

Revised Statutes (RS) 1842

Compiled Statutes (CS) 1853

General Statutes (GS) 1867

General Laws (GL) 1878

Public Statutes (PS) 1891 and Supplement

Public Laws (PL) 1926

Revised Laws (RL) 1942

If you need a copy of a Public Law or Revised Law, email the law library at lawlibrary@courts.state.nh.us

* Since we said that only "general and permanent" laws are in the NH Revised Statutes Annotated, that implies that there are laws that are not in the statutory code. There are. General, or public, laws affect society as a whole and permanent laws are in effect indefinitely. Laws that affect only individuals, or a single town or city, or single entities are not in the statutory code. Laws that are in effect for a short period of time, like an appropriations bill, also are not in the statutory code.
